Thales Junqueira é um diretor de arte nascido em Belo Horizonte, em 1987. Residindo no Recife, iniciou no cinema em 2009, com a direção de arte do curta-metragem Mens Sana In Corpore Sano, de Juliano Dornelles, premiado em sua estreia no Festival de Locarno. Ao longo de sua carreira tem colaborado com importantes nomes do cinema nacional, como, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Gabriel Mascaro, Sandra Kogut e Anna Muylaert.
Em 2014 realizou sua primeira direção de arte em longa-metragem, Que horas ela volta?, de Anna Muylaert, em parceria com Marcos Pedroso. Representante brasileiro na disputa pela indicação ao Oscar de melhor filme estrangeiro, a obra foi premiada nos festivais de Sundance e Berlim. Também com Pedroso, retomou a parceria na direção de arte de Três Verões, de Sandra Kogut, que teve sua estreia mundial no Festival de Toronto 2019.
Com Kleber Mendonça Filho, fez a direção de arte de Aquarius, que estreou na Seleção Oficial do Festival de Cannes 2016, concorrendo à Palma de Ouro e sendo premiado em diversos festivais importantes em todo o mundo. Ainda com Mendonça Filho, realizou a direção de arte de Bacurau. O filme, dirigido por Mendonça Filho e Juliano Dornelles, recebeu o Prêmio do Juri da Seleção Oficial do Festival de Cannes 2019.
Ao lado de Gabriel Mascaro, Thales concebeu o visual de um Brasil futurista para Divino Amor, que estreou no Festival de Sundance 2019 e recebeu entusiasmadas críticas de renomadas publicações internacionais. Também realizou a direção de arte do anárquico Sol Alegria, de Tavinho Teixeira, que teve estreia mundial no Festival de Rotterdam 2019, Rio Doce, de Fellipe Fernandes, e Doutor Gama, filme de Jefferson De que acompanha a história de Luiz Gama no Brasil escravocrata do século 19.
Seus projetos mais recentes são os longas ainda inéditos Sem Coração, de Nara Normande e Tião e The Grand Tour, do diretor português Miguel Gomes, inteiramente filmado nos estúdios da Cineccità em Roma.
Em 2021, Thales realizou a direção de arte da série Gangaço Novo, da Amazon Prime, produzida pela O2 Filmes, com direção de Fábio Mendonça e Aly Muritiba.
Recebeu os prêmios de Melhor Direção de Arte do Festival de Brasília pelo seu trabalho nos filmes Au Revoir, de Milena Times, e O delírio é a redenção dos aflitos, de Fellipe Fernandes. Foi indicado ao Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro e ao Prêmio ABC – Associação Brasileira de Cinematografia – pela direção de arte dos filmes Aquarius, Que horas ela volta?, Bacurau e Divino Amor. Em 2020, venceu o prêmio ABC pela Direção de Arte de Bacurau.
Thales Junqueira is a production designer born in Belo Horizonte, in 1987. Currently living in Recife, he began his work in cinema in 2009, as the production designer on the short film Mens Sana In Corpore Sano, by Juliano Dornelles, which was awarded in its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival. Throughout his career he has collaborated with important names in Brazilian cinema, such as Kleber Mendonça Filho, Gabriel Mascaro, Sandra Kogut e Anna Muylaert.
In 2014 he had his first production design credit on a feature film on The second mother, by Anna Muylaert, in partnership with Marcos Pedroso. Selected as the Brazilian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, the film was awarded at Sundance and Berlin film festivals. Also in partnership with Pedroso, he did the production design on Three summers, by Sandra Kogut, which had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival.
Along with Kleber Mendonça Filho, he did the production design on Aquarius, which had its premiere in the Official Selection at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d’Or. The film was also awarded at several important festivals around the world. Also with Mendonça Filho, he was the production designer on Bacurau. The film, directed by Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, won the Jury Prize in the Official Selection at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
Together with Gabriel Mascaro, Thales conceived the visuals of a futuristic Brazil on Divine Love, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim in renowned international publications. He was also the production designer on the anarchic film Sol Alegria, by Tavinho Teixeira, which had its world premiere at the 2019 Rotterdam Film Festival, Rio Doce, by Fellipe Fernandes, and Doutor Gama, by Jefferson De, which tells the story of Luiz Gama during the slavery period in 19th century Brazil.
His most recent projects include the upcoming films Heartless, by Nara Normande and Tião and The Grand Tour, by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes, entirely shot at the Cineccità studios in Rome.
In 2021, Thales was the Production Designer for the Amazon Prime series Gancaço Novo, produced by O2 Filmes and directed by Fábio Mendonça and Aly Muritiba.
Thales Junqueira was awarded for Best Production Design at the Brasília Film Festival for his work in the films Au Revoir, by Milena Times and Delusion is redemption to those in distress, by Fellipe Fernandes. He was nominated for the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prize and for the ABC Award – Brazilian Cinematography Association – for the production design of the films Aquarius, The second mother, Bacurau and Divine Love.
